What is MatesPlace?
MatesPlace is an app that helps users find flats and flatmates through friends of friends. It shows you if you have friends in common with other app users so you can choose to live with friends of friends rather than strangers.
Can I use MatesPlace for free?
Absolutely! You can download the app for iOS or Android and start using it right away.
Why can’t I download the app?
MatesPlace is currently available to download for UK, Europe*, USA, Canada, Australia and South African registered Apple or Google Play store accounts. The app can currently be used to list and search for places in the UK.

Why does the app want access to my contacts?
Granting access to your phone contacts lets us show you whether you have mutual friends in common with other app users. You can also narrow your search for places available within your own social network to just see options from people who are friends of friends. And don’t worry, we don’t download or store your phone contact data!
What are the Connection levels?
What does it mean to search for a place by Connections?
Why can’t I see any places through 1st, 2nd or 3rd levels of Connection?
Try reducing any filters you have applied to your search, expand your search area, or expand the degree of connection you want to have with your future flatmates. If you are still not finding any properties, it may be none of your friends of friends have a place available on the app or that you do not currently have any 1st level connections on the app. Look at ‘My connections’ under ‘My account’ to see which of your friends are using MatesPlace. The more of your friends that have the app, the more places you’re likely to see.
Can I add someone in the app as a Connection if they aren’t in my phone book?
You can choose to add another MatesPlace user as a connection in the app even if they aren’t saved in your phone book. By manually connecting, you’re adding each other to your MatesPlace network.
How do I report an inappropriate post or profile?
To report a listing, click on the post then select the three dots in the top right corner of the screen. Select whether you want to report the post or choose to block the user. So that we can properly investigate any reports, please include the reason for the report, the title of the listing and the name of the user who has posted it.
Similarly, to report another user, click on their profile, select the three dots in the top right corner of the screen.
The more details you can provide, the quicker we can identify and investigate the listing or user in question.
Why isn’t my sync contacts working?
Sync contacts can only work if you’ve allowed us access to your contacts. If you are not sure, check the settings for the app on your phone and toggle to allow MatesPlace to access your contacts. This check means we then show you if any of your friends are on the app and list them under ‘My connections’.
Why isn’t MatesPlace syncing with my Facebook contacts?
MatesPlace does not, and will not, access your Facebook contacts. Instead, we show you who you know through friends saved in your phone contacts.

How do I start using MatesPlace?
You can download the app for iOS or Android. MatesPlace currently supports iOS 13 and Android 4.1 and up.
How do I create a MatesPlace account?
When you have downloaded the app we will ask you to create an account and profile. To set up the account you will need to enter your name, phone number, email address and then choose a password.
The app will ask for access to your contacts so you can see which of your friends are already using MatesPlace – but we don’t download or store your contact data!
To complete your profile you can add a photo of yourself, add your location and tell us a little about yourself to help any future flatmates get to know you.
Why should I add my friends to the app?
The more friends you have on the app, the more places you’ll be able to see from within your social network. Click on the profile icon in the bottom right corner then select ‘Invite friends’ – here you can send a link to download the app to any of your friends.
How do I edit my profile?
Click on the profile icon in the bottom right corner. Next to your name, click on ‘Edit Profile’. Here you can update the details of your account and profile, then click ‘Update’ to post to the app.
How do I add a place?
On the home page select ‘Add a place’. Follow the instructions to enter details about the space, about the current flatmates, who the room is suitable for and a short description of the property (e.g. what’s the nearest transport, great pubs nearby). You can also preview your listing before you post it to the app.
How do I save a place to review later?
You can click the heart icon on a listing to save it to review later. You can access your liked listings via the heart icon at the bottom of the screen.
My listing has been filled, how do I take it down?
Click on the profile icon at the bottom right corner and select ‘My places’. Select the listing and at the top right hand corner click on the three dots to either deactivate, edit or delete your listing. The benefit of deactivating is if anything falls through you can immediately reactivate your listing without having to re-enter all the information.
